To stock the first industrial-scale solid oxide electrolytic cells (SOECs) for the production of green ammonia, fuel for transportation, storage, and power generation, as well as fertilizer, Topsoe and First Ammonia signed a commercial agreement to launch 5GW.
In the future, First Ammonia’s green ammonia plants will be equipped with Topsoe’s revolutionary, energy-efficient Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC). During the agreement period, the purchase of SOEC units is initially limited to 500 MW and can be increased to 5 GW.
Topsoe’s SOEC manufacturing plant will be built in Herning, Denmark. This will be the largest electrolyte reservation ever made, at 5 GW. Five million tonnes of green ammonia produced annually will take nine million gasoline-powered cars off the road, equivalent to 13 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
First Ammonia has developed locations worldwide, with its first 500 MW capacity installed at sites in northern Germany and the southwestern United States. These projects will be the world’s first commercial-scale green ammonia production facilities, scheduled to be operational in 2025. The first ammonia will be active in all of its plants to support existing renewable energy markets.
Joel Moser, CEO of First Ammonia, said, "We have absolute confidence in Topsoe and its renowned scientists and engineers, which is why we have chosen Topsoe as a partner. mine. With state-of-the-art SOEC electrolysis equipment and industry-leading ammonia synthesis, we will develop facilities around the world to produce millions of tonnes of green ammonia from water and air. Ammonia saved humanity from starvation a century ago as a replacement for depleted fertiliser sources, thanks in large part to Topsoe's excellence. "Ammonia can once again save humanity as the dark horse of the hydrogen economy, replacing petrochemicals for decarbonization in agriculture, transportation, storage, and power generation."
Topsoe CEO Roeland Baan commented: "We need to accelerate the development and industrialization of sustainable solutions while increasing energy independence, which is why we are very pleased. We are excited to partner with First Ammonia to develop our green ammonia facilities globally. With this agreement, we are enabling the production of millions of tonnes of green ammonia to support the decarbonization program.
About First Ammonia
First Ammonia is developing a global network of dynamic, modular, commercial-scale plants to produce green ammonia from renewable energy utilizing Topsoe’s solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) technology. Its first plants under development in Northern Germany and Southwestern United States are expected to be fully operational in 2025 and will be the world’s first commercial scale green ammonia production facilities. With headquarters in New York City, First Ammonia has established an initial plan for 5GW of electrolyzer capacity for the production of up to 5 million metric tons of green ammonia per year.
